Positive statements about the employment and job situation for women in Malta can be made on the basis of published statistics. Malta is a very conservative and Catholic country. The resulting family structures are still recognisable today, so it took some time until women entered the professional world. Now it seems that women can be found in almost every profession that used to be exclusively for male workers. Be it in the hospital, as a lawyer or a police officer, there is no profession anymore that is exclusively reserved for men.
It used to be the case that several families worked together in a group. The men were on the boats and went out to the sea together to catch fish. Women used to do farm work, as well as the household. It was a different work process, which cannot be compared with today. After the industrialisation and the development towards a service oriented society the structures gradually changed.
Maltese women can be proud of themselves that they found their way into the economy and enrich them with their work. Especially in Malta, there are still some people in offices that have difficulties with this new image of women. However, they are gradually getting used to women that go to work just like the men, and not only do the household.
An essential point of this discussion is also, that women have the same opportunities as men. In recent years, the government tried to fight imbalances in the economy as well as in public administration. This commitment is also due to the vigour of some women’s movements that have demonstrated for more freedom, justice and acceptance of women in the workplace. This general issue of equality will hopefully be a matter of the past soon. At the office of Dr. Werner & Partner, we take it for granted that men and women work hand-in-hand and are equal parts of social life.
