According to a Eurobarometer survey from the European Union Malta tops a few lists with their positive attitude towards the EU. This means that the Maltese citizens have trust in the EU and their institutions. At the moment, Malta and Luxemburg are at the top of the list, and Malta even showed an increase since the last survey was conducted in 2009. Overall, 69% of the Maltese trust the EU, and that it takes into account the concerns of the citizens.
Since Malta has been a part of the EU for 10 years now, the survey also states that 68% of Maltese citizens believe that being a part of the EU is a good thing, which is 5% more than in 2009, and 76% feel they are attached to Europe, 12% more than in the last survey.
Not everyone in the EU reflects these positive results. On an average, only 51% think that being a part of the European Union is a good thing, and mostly younger people have this opinion.
In the Eurobarometer survey that was conducted in August, the 500 surveyed people expressed an average of 52% trust in their national government, 4% more than in the last survey. This trust in the national government is also among the highest in Europe, as the overall trust is at only 27%. 64% of the Maltese named immigration as the biggest problem.
The figures show that the Maltese seem to be happy to be a part of the European Union, and that they trust their government. A lot has changed in Malta in the last 10 years, and most of these changes seem to please the Maltese people. Just recently, Malta was also named number 2 of the best performing EU member states.
