Merchant ship register in Malta is 6th largest in the world

Transport Malta reported a very positive performance of the Malta ship register in 2014. The small island nation in the Mediterranean is now the 6th largest ship register in the whole world, and also the largest in Europe. Compared to last year, when Malta was at the 7th place, the ship register also registered an increase in gross tonnage of 6.5 million more, which is 12.5% more than in the previous year, which was also a record year for the islands.

At the end of 2014 there were over 2.500 merchant ships under the Maltese flag. There were also 191,376 applications from officers wanting to work on Maltese ships, of which 16,639 were processed during the year. The figures are a very positive achievement for Malta.

The increase in the number of registered ships is not everything Malta achieved this year; the country also continued to consolidate their position on the Tokyo MoU and the Paris MoU White lists. This means that the country had very positive results with regards to state control, reinforcing the quality of the fleet and the commitment for secure, safe and clean shipping. This great reputation will help the Malta flag to maintain their popularity in the world.

Malta is also one of the world leaders for commercial yacht registrations. The results from last year were also very positive, and an increase of 13.6% compared to 2013 was recorded for the registration of super yachts over 24 m in length. There are currently 452 super yachts operating under the Maltese flag.

Registering a yacht in Malta bears certain advantages, among them are a favourable taxation structure which allows yacht owners to save a significant amount of money not only when buying a yacht, but also when operating it.
