The first two months of 2015 showed very promising results for the tourism ministry in Malta. The cumulative data for January and February showed an increase of almost 14,000 more tourists than in the previous year. These tourists also stayed 64,000 more nights, and the figure reached almost 1.2 million in total. The estimated expenditure is around €140 million, which is an increase of €11 million compared to the same period in 2014.
This increase in tourism is very positive for the islands, as more tourists also mean more jobs for locals and more taxes for the government. The results also confirm Malta’s efforts to increase tourism. More routes are being introduced and more airlines are offering direct flights to Malta.
Even though Malta is a beautiful tourist destination, it is also an interesting country for companies and professionals from all across Europe. The favourable taxation structure for both companies and employees is turning the country into a popular location for companies wishing to relocate the business in order to optimise the tax burden. Employees can benefit from considerably lower income taxes and national insurance contributions. The good work opportunities in combination with the great leisure activities and pleasant weather that Malta has to offer are the reason why many people relocate to the island in the Mediterranean.
