Who the Malta flag is right for - and when other registries make more sense
Malta is a premier choice for many yacht owners. But it's not for everyone. We'll clear that up in our first call.
Ideal for
- Motor and sailing yachts from around 12m that regularly cruise in EU waters and the Mediterranean
- Superyacht owners looking for a professional ownership and charter structure under a recognised EU flag
- Charter operators wanting to register their fleet under an established EU flag state with a tonnage tax option
- Owners looking to reflag from another registry (like the Red Ensign, Cayman Islands, or Marshall Islands) to an EU flag
- Maritime companies wanting to hold a vessel in a registry with a solid Common Law framework and excellent reputation
Less suitable for
- Small boats under 7m or RIBs - the administrative effort simply outweighs the benefits
- Vessels operating exclusively in non-EU waters, where other flags might offer better local recognition
- Owners looking to avoid regulatory oversight and proper compliance

Why owners choose to work with us
Local firm - no middlemen
You work directly with our team in Malta. We coordinate with Transport Malta, the Registrar of Ships, and your survey societies. No intermediaries, no information lost between broker and registry.
End-to-end maritime structures
Registration is just one piece of the puzzle. We advise on the ownership company, tonnage tax eligibility, charter agreements, and ongoing compliance. Lawyers, tax advisers, and accountants under one roof - instead of three separate advisers who don't talk to each other.
Honest flag advice
Not every vessel belongs under the Malta flag. If your cruising profile, tonnage, or charter situation suggests a different registry, we'll tell you upfront. We earn our keep through good advice, not by pushing through as many registrations as possible.

FAQs about yacht registration in Malta
Malta registers sailing and motor yachts, superyachts, commercial vessels, and charter yachts. There is no minimum tonnage requirement - however, in practice, the administrative effort usually only makes sense for vessels over 12m in length. For very small boats, we generally recommend local registration.
Costs are made up of registration fees (based on net tonnage), annual tonnage tax, and our advisory fees. For a typical motor yacht between 15m and 30m, total first-year costs usually fall in the low to mid five-figure range. We'll provide an exact breakdown after our initial assessment.
Provisional registration can usually be arranged within 3 to 5 working days. Your vessel can then immediately fly the Malta flag. Full registration takes between 4 and 8 weeks, depending on the complexity of the ownership structure and the availability of survey documents.
Provisional registration is an official procedure by Transport Malta. You receive a provisional flag state certificate valid for six months. During this time, the full registration process is completed. Meanwhile, the vessel can operate without restriction under the Malta flag.
Malta offers a VAT Leasing Scheme where VAT on yachts is calculated based on actual use in EU waters. Depending on the vessel type and cruising profile, the effective tax burden can be significantly lower than the standard 18% rate. We'll check if this scheme makes sense for your vessel during our initial call.
Yes. Malta is one of the most popular flag states for charter yachts in the Mediterranean. Commercial charters do come with additional requirements - specifically ISM compliance, a suitable charter structure, and, depending on size, ISPS certification. We guide you through the entire process, from setting up the ownership company to securing operational approval.
Annual duties include tonnage tax declarations, certificate renewals, classification society surveys, and updating vessel documentation with Transport Malta. Commercial vessels also require ISM and ISPS audits. We handle the coordination of these obligations so you don't have to worry about missing official deadlines.
To reflag, you'll need a Deletion Certificate from your current registry, up-to-date survey certificates, and proof of ownership. We coordinate the timeline to ensure your vessel is never left without a valid flag. Provisional Malta registration can often be initiated in parallel with the deletion process at your old registry. This is particularly relevant for UK owners moving from the Red Ensign to secure EU cabotage rights.
