Summary

Cyprus offers families a high quality of life: 320 days of sunshine, low crime rates, an excellent healthcare system (GESY), and over 14 international schools, mostly following the British curriculum. School fees range from EUR 2,400 to EUR 6,720 per year. New child tax allowances from 2026 make Cyprus even more attractive for families. Paphos and Limassol are the most popular locations for expats.

Why Cyprus for families with children?

Cyprus has become an increasingly attractive destination for families from the UK and Northern Europe. The reasons go far beyond the tax advantages:

  • Safety: With a crime index of just 27.3 (compared to the EU average of 44), Cyprus is one of the safest countries in Europe (Anisad Blog). Children can grow up in an environment where parents feel secure.
  • Climate and Nature: Around 320 days of sunshine, 64 Blue Flag beaches, and mild winters allow for year-round outdoor activities. Children spend much more time outdoors—a stark contrast to the long, dark winters of Northern Europe.
  • British Connection: English is widely spoken and is the language of instruction in private schools. The legal and administrative systems are based on the British model, making the transition familiar for UK families.
  • International Schools: Over 14 international schools offering British, American, or IB curricula ensure high educational standards and continuity.
  • EU Membership: Freedom of movement, EU-recognised qualifications, and easy travel connections to the rest of Europe.

For families with school-age children, we recommend Paphos or Limassol—both cities offer a solid selection of international schools with British or IB curricula. Paphos is particularly popular with UK expats due to its community feel and lower cost of living.

School system in Cyprus: Public, private and international

The Cypriot education system is divided into three pillars: public schools (free, instruction in Greek), private schools, and international schools. For expat families, the latter two are usually the most relevant options.

Public Schools

Attendance at public schools is free and open to foreign children. Instruction is entirely in Greek. Some schools offer support classes for children who do not speak the language. This option is best suited for families planning to stay in Cyprus permanently and seeking full cultural integration.

International Schools

International schools are the most popular choice for expat families. They teach in English and typically follow the British National Curriculum, the American system, or the International Baccalaureate (IB). Qualifications (GCSEs, A-Levels, IB Diploma) are recognised globally, allowing for a seamless transition to universities in the UK, Europe, or North America.

Pre-school and Kindergarten

Public pre-schools are free from the age of 4 years and 8 months. Private nurseries and kindergartens accept children from as young as 3 months, with monthly costs ranging from EUR 300 to EUR 600. Many international schools run their own Early Years programmes starting from age 3 or 4.

In total, there are over 14 international schools in Cyprus, distributed across Limassol, Paphos, Nicosia, and Larnaca. Annual tuition fees generally range between EUR 2,400 and EUR 6,720.

Tip: Secure school places early

Popular international schools like ISOP or the American Academy often have waiting lists. It is advisable to apply 3-6 months before your desired start date. Most schools offer assessment tests and taster days. Mid-year transfers are usually accommodated.

The British Curriculum Advantage

For families moving from the UK, Cyprus offers a distinct advantage: the widespread adoption of the British curriculum. This ensures that children's education is not disrupted.

  • Seamless Transition: Students can continue their GCSE and A-Level studies without missing a beat.
  • University Access: Qualifications obtained in Cyprus are fully recognised by UK universities (UCAS points apply as normal).
  • Language Environment: While Greek is taught as a second language, the primary language of instruction and playground interaction is English.

Cost of living for families

Monthly costs for a family of four in Cyprus depend heavily on the location and lifestyle. Below is a realistic estimate:

CategoryPaphos/LarnacaLimassol
Rent (3-bed apartment)EUR 700-900EUR 2,000-2,750
Groceries (4 people)EUR 700-1,000EUR 700-1,000

UtilitiesEUR 100-200EUR 100-200

Total (approx.)EUR 2,250-3,850EUR 3,650-5,800

The biggest variable is rent. In Paphos, a family can find a 3-bedroom apartment for around EUR 700-900, whereas in Limassol, costs can be two to three times higher. Groceries and school fees are comparable across cities. For a detailed breakdown, read our Guide to Cost of Living in Cyprus.

Healthcare for children: GESY and paediatricians

The state healthcare system, GESY (GHS), fully covers children. Contributions are paid by the parents—there are no additional GESY contributions for children themselves. The system includes:

  • Paediatricians (Primary care)
  • Specialists (Allergists, Orthopaedists, etc.)
  • Emergency care in all hospitals
  • Medication (with small co-payments)
  • Vaccination programme (aligned with EU recommendations)

Cyprus ranks highly for healthcare quality in international surveys (InterNations). Paediatricians are readily available in Limassol, Paphos, and Larnaca. Waiting times within the GESY system are generally short for children.

Many expat families choose to take out private top-up insurance to ensure access to private doctors and bypass any potential waiting lists for specialists. Costs typically range from EUR 50 to EUR 120 per child per month.

Paphos: Our favourite for families

Paphos offers the best overall package for families: affordable rents, an established international community, excellent schools like ISOP, UNESCO World Heritage sites for weekend trips, and some of the island's best coastline. The high percentage of foreign residents (63%) means children make friends quickly.

Limassol: For families with a higher budget

Limassol offers the widest range of international schools, the most leisure activities for children, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. However, the significantly higher rental prices make it an option primarily for families with a corresponding income.

Tax benefits: New child allowances 2026

The 2026 tax reform introduces a child tax allowance for families resident in Cyprus for the first time. The new deductions are as follows (ITR World Tax):

Number of ChildrenMax. Family IncomeAllowance
1-2 ChildrenUp to EUR 100,000Child Allowance
3-4 ChildrenUp to EUR 150,000Child Allowance
5+ ChildrenUp to EUR 200,000Child Allowance

Additionally, interest on housing loans can be deducted up to EUR 2,000 per spouse annually. The combination of Non-Dom status (0% tax on dividends for 17 years) and these new child allowances makes Cyprus particularly tax-efficient for entrepreneurial families.

Daily life with kids: Leisure, sports and integration

Sports and Leisure

Cyprus offers children a wide range of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed year-round:

  • Water Sports: Swimming, sailing, snorkelling, SUP—thanks to 64 Blue Flag beaches.
  • Football: Numerous youth clubs and football academies.
  • Tennis: Playable year-round, with many public and private courts.
  • Hiking: The Troodos Mountains offer family-friendly trails.
  • Horse Riding: Riding schools available in Paphos, Limassol, and Larnaca.
  • Culture: Archaeological parks, museums, and festivals.

Integration for Children

Experience shows that children adapt quickly to the new environment. International schools are accustomed to new arrivals and often offer buddy programmes and intensive English courses. Most children are fluent in English within 3-6 months.

Cypriot society is very family-oriented. Children are welcome everywhere, including restaurants and evening events, which makes integration easier for the whole family.

Cyprus ranks 10th worldwide for Ease of Settling In—climbing 7 places. Expats particularly highlight the friendliness of the locals and how easy it is to make friends.
