Sailing in Malta – Popular sailing destinations

Sailing is a popular activity in Malta, especially in summer. Many people charter yachts to cruise around the islands, and others use their own sailing or motor yachts. The Mediterranean Sea around Malta is an excellent place to sail and offers pristine waters, caves, bays and beaches. In this article I would like to highlight some of the most popular sailing spots around the Maltese islands.

Blue Lagoon

As the name suggests, the Blue Lagoon at Comino has waters so blue and clear that it is hard to find words for the beauty of it – you definitely need to see it for yourself! It is one of the most popular spots for tourists to visit and for sailors to make a stop there. It is usually very crowded during the day in summer, but when you go there in the early mornings or late afternoon the tourist cruise boats will have left again. Close to the Blue Lagoon is also the Crystal Lagoon that can only be accessed by boats. The lagoon is surrounded by cliffs and it is perfect for snorkelling and diving.

Peter’s Pool

Peter’s Pool is located in the south of Malta between Marsaskala and Marsaxlokk. There is also the Il-Ħofra l-Kbira and the Il-Ħofra ż-Żgħira bays offering stunning views, cliffs and swimming. Peter’s Pool is a small bay that is especially popular for jumps from the cliffs in the water, as the bay is deep and the sea is clear.

Sicily and Lampedusa

When you are sailing from Malta is also convenient to visit Sicily or Lampedusa. Sicily is located 58 nm north and Lampedusa 95 nm west of Malta. The trip is especially pleasant in the summer when the sea is calmer.

If you are owning a yacht you might want to consider registering it in Malta. Registration fees and taxes are considerably cheaper than in other countries. If you are a first-time buyer it is probably interesting for you to hear that the VAT for sailing and motor yachts does not depend on the purchase price of the vessel but on its length and intended use.
