Malta is not only popular for the hot weather in summer and great economic situation, it is also a popular destination for scuba divers. There are many diving schools, and it is possible to obtain many different certificates. Malta has particularly clear waters, and very diverse underwater landscape and sea life. You can find reefs, caves as well as wrecks and an abundance of different species. Today, I would like to write about some of the most popular diving spots around Malta and Gozo.
Caves
A popular cave and cavern network is located in Ghar Lapsi, on the West Coast of Malta. There are many tunnels and caverns, and the dive is suitable for beginners. Another popular cave is Alex cave at Comino. It offers spectacular underwater views, and it is a relatively easy dive with an average depth of 10 m. Another popular dive spot are the Santa Maria caves that are also located at Comino. It has a reputation to be one of the best diving sites in Malta, as it offers a broad mix of sea life, as well as a cave system and interesting reef formations.
Wrecks
There are a number of wrecks around the Maltese islands. One of them is Rozi, which is a 40 m long tugboat, located in around 30m depth approximately 100 m from the jetty in Cirkewwa. Very close to the Rozi wreck is also the P29, which is a former minesweeper and patrol boat that was scuttled in 2007. The 52 m long ship now serves as an artificial reef.
There are also a few aeroplane wrecks. The Blenheim Bomber is located in the south of Malta. The history is not completely clear, but the plane was used by the British Army during the World War II. Many parts are still recognisable, and the dive is well worth it. However, this is only a dive for very experienced and advanced divers. Another popular plane wreck is the Bristol Beaufighter near Sliema, which is also a plane from the Second World War.
Reefs
There are number of different reefs that are worth visiting. One of them is the Double Arch at Cominotto, that offers a unique experience, interesting formations and the chance to see bigger fish. Along Cirkewwa, you can find the Paradise Bay, which is a popular location for night dives, as it is common to see cuttlefish, octopuses or moray eels.
