The 10 most beautiful places in Cyprus – that you need to know

This enchanting island in the eastern Mediterranean is known for its numerous archaeological wonders, sun-drenched beaches, crystal-clear waters, stunningly rugged coastline, charming villas adorned with mosaics, and its reputation as the birthplace of Aphrodite, the revered Greek goddess of beauty.

Divided into a Greek southern region and a Turkish northern region, Cyprus is a fascinating destination that offers numerous unspoiled natural paradises for those who are aware of their existence. Based on my extensive visits to this exquisite island, here I present 10 of the most charming and picturesque places to discover in Cyprus…. “Eastern Mediterranean Island”

  1. Nissi Beach, Ayia Napa – a popular beach awarded with the Blue Flag.

Be prepared for a bustle of activity at Nissi Beach, as it is a popular destination among beachgoers. Despite its popularity, the beach exudes an undeniable beauty. Nissi Beach is easily accessible and offers an abundance of activities for everyone. From foam parties to nightly entertainment, there’s always something going on here. When the tides are favorable, a small island emerges, allowing visitors to explore the enchanting coast of Nissi. Water sports, boat rentals, lively bars and cozy cafes make this a year-round hotspot. Remember to bring a few euros for the rental of umbrellas and sunbeds, which are much appreciated in high season.

  1. Blue Lagoon Akamas – Discover the unspoiled beauty

If you are looking for a fascinating place in Cyprus away from the tourist centers, then the Blue Lagoon Akamas is for you. To reach this pristine and awe-inspiring place requires some effort. The easiest way to see the bright blue waters of Akamas Blue Lagoon is by boat. If you prefer the overland route, you should rent or own a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The road to the lagoon is long and demanding, so you should be extra careful. Once you arrive, however, you will be rewarded with a range of water activities, including snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of this extraordinary hidden gem in Cyprus.

  1. Ayia Napa and Protaras/Fig Tree Beach – resort bliss and a golden coastline

Cyprus is known for its beaches, and rightly so. Some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline are located in the eastern part of the country, near the resorts of Ayia Napa and Protaras. Ayia Napa is especially popular with clubbers and party lovers. The neighboring town of Protaras, only 10 km away, offers a quieter ambience and is geared more towards families and locals. Both places have beautiful beaches with crystal clear water and golden sand.

  1. Paphos – unveiling the charm of a coastal city

Paphos is located on the southwest coast of the island and is the smallest city in Cyprus, but it exudes tremendous charm. The old town and the harbor area are made for a romantic walk at sunset. Just two miles from Paphos is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Royal Tombs, a testament to the city’s rich history, with ancient ruins of tombs and fortresses waiting to be explored.

  1. Konnos Beach – A picturesque harbor by the sea

Konnos Beach, considered by many Cypriots to be the most picturesque beach in the country, undoubtedly deserves a place on this list. However, due to its reputation, it attracts many people during the summer months. To fully enjoy the beauty of the beach, it is recommended to visit it on a weekday when you can enjoy the surroundings in peace and have easy access to the water.

  1. Nicosia City and the Green Line – a refined urban retreat

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is often referred to as the “last divided capital of Europe” because its northern part, like the northern part of the island, is militarily occupied by Turkey. Visitors can walk as far as the UN buffer zone, known as the Green Line, which crosses the city and divides the island. Those who wish can cross the border to the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” (which is recognized only by Turkey). Nicosia offers a cultured and cosmopolitan ambience with numerous beautiful sights to discover.

  1. Makronissos Beach – a family friendly oasis

The beaches in Cyprus are numerous, but not all are the same. Some beaches can be crowded, unclean or unpleasant. However, Makronissos Beach stands out as a family-friendly, clean and easily accessible place. Its crystal clear waters invite you, your friends and family to swim and snorkel while admiring the local marine life. Makronissos Beach offers free public parking and a variety of snack bars along the coast. If you are looking for an ideal place to relax and enjoy time with your loved ones, Makronissos Beach is the place for you.

  1. Limassol – a vibrant coastal city

Even though Limassol is not exactly known for its beaches, its inhabitants vehemently claim that the city’s beaches are in no way inferior to those in other parts of the island. However, what really sets Limassol apart as a fantastic vacation destination is its urban character. The city offers an abundance of entertainment, dining and sightseeing options that surpass those of traditional resorts. Limassol also hosts the country’s largest carnival parade every spring, which attracts thousands of people.

  1. Coral Bay – Soft sand, rocky headlands and sea caves

A visit to Cyprus would be incomplete without experiencing Coral Bay. This remarkable beach destination with its sandy shores manages to maintain a sense of tranquility even during the high season when tourists flock to the island. Coral Bay is easily accessible by both car and public transportation, making it an ideal place for families with young children. Although the bay has some waves, the currents are remarkably calm compared to other beaches.

  1. Lara Bay – Remote tranquility and home to turtles

To escape the crowds and enjoy seclusion, Lara Bay is the ideal choice. This horseshoe-shaped bay offers pristine coastal views and unique wildlife found nowhere else. Wild goats and birds have found their refuge at Lara Bay, but the most remarkable inhabitants of the beach are the nesting green turtles. Be careful when choosing a place to relax on this beach, as it is an important breeding ground for these wonderful animals. Due to the remote location and few amenities, it is advisable to bring your own shade, food and drinks. With the right preparation and a suitable vehicle with four-wheel drive, you can spend a wonderful day in Lara Bay in Cyprus.
