With this in mind, Malta seems to be a very catholic country with old-fashioned customs, that are not very modern. This impression is misleading, as Malta has a lot more to offer than just churches and historical buildings. I am talking about an energetic and lively culture that is happy to welcome people from all over the world.
Especially film lovers are getting their money’s worth! Valletta, the smallest capital city in Europe (with a population of just over 7,000 ) has been the setting for many movies. Among the most well-known are “The Da Vinci Code”, “Alexander”, “Gladiator”, and Steven Spielberg’s thriller “Munich”.
The cliffs in Malta are especially popular with the producers, but the pleasant climate does its part as well and offers many hours of sunshine. Malta was also a location in one of Brad Pitt’s latest movies “World War Z”. I can still remember the shooting. Valletta was occupied by film crews and equipment, and large parts of the city where closed off, and not accessible to the public. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are currently filming scenes of their new film “By the Sea” in Gozo.
There are also some German movies that have used Malta as a filming location. Among them is Michael Bully Herbig and his production of “Wicki und die starken Männer”. They shot scenes in a harbour basin that is frequently used for filming of storm scenes. A popular destination for tourists is the film set of the movie Popeye, the Popeye Village. Today, the wooden village in the north-east of Malta is an amusement park. Visiting the village is especially nice for families with children, as there are plenty of entertainment options for kids. A visit is definitely worth it!
