This citizenship can be acquired by individuals and their immediate families if a contribution is made to aid the development of Malta. Not everyone can apply for the programme, and nationals of Iran, Afghanistan and North Korea are excluded.
The benefits of having a European citizenship
The island nation Malta is strategically located in the Mediterranean. It is the southernmost country of Europe and offers a pleasant climate all year round. The economy has been doing very well, and last year was yet another success for the country. The banks in Malta are stable, the GDP is rising and the unemployment rate is low.
Malta is a part of the European Union, and the citizenship gives the passport holder the right of free movement within all 28 member states of the EU. This means that the passport holder can settle and work in any EU country they wish. The Maltese passport also offers visa free travel to over 160 countries.
Application requirements
In order to qualify for the programme the applicant has to fulfil stringent requirements and undergo thorough checks. It is necessary to either rent or buy real estate. When purchasing, the value must be at least €350,000 and when renting, the minimum annual rent must be €16,000. The applicant also has to make a contribution to the National Development and Social Fund. The amount depends on how many dependants the applicant wants to register as well, but for the main applicant the fee is €650,000. There are also other fees, such as due diligence fees to cover the cost for checks, passport fees and bank charges.
