Types of Remote Gaming licences from the Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LGA) in Malta

The Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LGA) in Malta enjoys a great reputation with online gambling operators and players all over the world. Strict regulations and regular testing ensure that players are safe, and protection of the player has top priority. The regulatory authority offers four different classes of licences, depending on what product the operator wants to offer.

Class 1 – is a remote gaming license for casino games and lotteries where the operators manage their own risk with repetitive games

Class 2 – is a remote betting license for fixed-odds betting, spread betting and pool betting where the operators manage their own risk on outcomes of events

Class 3 – is a licence to abet or promote remote gaming from or in Malta. This includes P2P gaming, poker networks and other game portals

Class 4 – is a licence to manage or host remote gaming operators, but this excludes the licensee. It is for software developers providing and hosting platforms for gaming operators.

Acquiring a license incurs application fees, as well as yearly license fees, administrative fees and approval fees. These fees vary with the license. Other than these charges, the Gaming Tax will have to be paid on revenues. These also differ by license.

How to apply for a Remote Gaming license

The application process is very straightforward. However, it is essential to fulfil all the requirements and to hand in all the necessary documentation. The application process is divided into three stages. The first one is the in depth review of the business plan. The second phase is the assessment of the abilities of the business in which the regulatory body reviews and examines all the instruments that are required to operate the business, such as the games, terms and conditions and the documents. If the above two phases are successful, a provisional license will be issued. Then there will be a compliance audit a few weeks later to ensure that the licensee is commencing his operations to the required standards.
