Melita plans to double the data centre capacity in Malta

Malta’s leading Internet and telephony provider, Melita, has announced that their project to double the data centre capacity is expected to go live in early 2015. They are also planning to increase the data colocation services of the company tenfold. The new data centre in Malta is part of a €60 million investment that is being applied over a five-year period. Melita is heavily investing into making the whole telephony and intranet structure more attractive. It started with the submarine fibre-optics cable to mainland Europe. There are data links leading directly to Milan and Northern Europe, as there are many Scandinavian companies conducting their business in Malta. For example many iGaming businesses in Malta are of Scandinavian origin.

The colocation services enable customers to rent bandwidth and data storage. With more and more Internet-based companies on the island the demand has increased dramatically. Even though connections are already very good, the current centre’s capacity had been sold out in just a few months after it was opened. The high demand led the company to build a new data centre that will be completed next year. This new colocation project will be greatly beneficial to the national economy. It will make Malta even more attractive for foreign investors to move their business operations to Malta, especially Internet-based companies. They can benefit from very high Internet connection speeds and capacities with reasonable pricing structures.

The new data centre project in Malta has already been internationally marketed by the company, and many foreign investors have expressed their interest. Some of these foreign companies are also considering relocating their business to Malta.

It is not only the fast high-capacity Internet that makes Malta an attractive location for a business, the island nation has much more to offer. For example, businesses who move their operations to Malta can benefit from a tax refund of up to 6/7 of the corporate taxes if certain criteria are met.
