The tax advantage

Why the Beckham regime is interesting for entrepreneurs

The Beckham regime does not only benefit employees. It also covers people who move to Spain because they are appointed director of a company – and that is exactly how entrepreneurs gain access. The size of the shareholding generally does not matter; only for companies that mainly hold assets must it be below 25%. Anyone who meets the requirements can be taxed at a much lower rate for six years.

0% on foreign dividends

Dividends, interest and capital gains from abroad are tax-free in Spain.

0% on your assets abroad

Spanish wealth tax applies only to assets in Spain. Whatever you own outside Spain is left untouched.

24% instead of up to 54% income tax

Your employment income – including income paid from abroad – is taxed at a flat 24% up to €600,000 and at 47% above that. Depending on the region, the standard progressive rates reach up to 54%.

Common questions

No. Entrepreneurs can benefit too, typically through a role as managing director. We work out the exact arrangement case by case.

No. You move to Spain while your business runs through a company abroad. That company does, however, have to be genuinely managed outside Spain: if the key decisions are taken in Spain, Spain can treat it as Spanish resident. We work out how to keep the two properly separate case by case.

The main ones are: no Spanish tax residence in the five tax years before your move, a qualifying reason for the move (such as appointment as a company director), no income through a permanent establishment in Spain, an application within six months of the start of your activity as recorded in your Spanish social security registration, and Spanish tax residence (usually more than 183 days a year).

Leaving your current country of residence can trigger exit taxation – in Germany, for example. We plan your departure carefully in advance and coordinate with your existing tax adviser.

The Beckham regime applies for up to six tax years: the year in which you become tax resident in Spain plus the following five.
