Overview of the banks in Malta and how to open a business bank account

Susan MeierSusan MeierUpdated 2 min read.md

There are a number of different banks operating in Malta. Some of them are of Maltese origin, others are branches of larger international banks. Today, I would like to introduce to you some of the more popular banks for businesses in Malta, and I would like to give you some information about what is needed to open a corporate bank account in Malta.

The most popular and largest banks in Malta are HSBC Malta plc, Banif, APS, Bank of Valletta (BOV) and Lombard. There are also plenty of other banks available, and depending on what your business needs are, the office of Dr. Werner & Partner can help you choose the right business bank account for your needs. We work closely with many banks to ensure that all your business needs are met, and that all required documentation is handed in.

Required documents to open a corporate bank account in Malta

Non-resident individuals (directors or shareholders of a Maltese company) will have to provide a reference from another bank, a copy of their passport, a proof of address, such as a utility bill and official documents about the company in Malta.

If it is a company that is registering the bank account, a bank reference and a copy of the passport, and proof of address such as utility bills need to be provided for each beneficial owner, director and signatory. The company’s incorporation documents, a certificate of good standing and a bankers reference for the company are also necessary.

Assisting you and your company with opening a bank account is only one of the many services the office of Dr. Werner & Partner provides. If you are interested in our other services, please take a look at what we offer. Please feel free to get in touch if there is anything you would like to know about company incorporation and Malta, residence relocation, or legal & tax advice.
