The tourism industry in Malta is currently booming, and this year has been particularly good, with an increase of over 5% of people visiting the islands. July has been another record-breaking month now, and a total of 166,300 people spend a combined 1.1 million nights in this month. In comparison to July 2013, this is an advance by 8.3% in numbers of people, and 4.3% on the number of nights spent in accommodation establishments.
The hotel industry was particularly happy about this development, and the four-star hotels had the largest share of guests. There are currently 166 registered accommodation establishments in Malta. Their net capacity is almost 19,000 bedrooms and 41,000 beds-places. The net occupancy rate increased from 82.3% to 85.3%. Even though this is only 3% more, it does make a big difference to the economy, revenues of the hotels and the whole tourism industry.
One factor for the rise in tourist numbers may be the offers from budget airlines, such as easyJet and Ryanair that provide many direct connections from the UK and other European cities to Malta. Of course, the climate of the islands is very attractive, and it has a lot to offer in regards to cultural Heritage, clear waters and nature. Malta has also made itself a name in international economy, and more and more people become aware of this small island nation in the middle of the Mediterranean, be it for business or recreational purposes.
If you are also thinking about visiting Malta but you would like to avoid the sizzling heat in summer, you should consider visiting in late spring or autumn, to enjoy the island at its fullest and greenest.
