The Digital Nomad Residency Permit in Malta enables individuals to legally reside in Malta while maintaining their employment based in another country. The permit is designed for individuals who can work remotely and independently of location, using telecommunications technologies. To be eligible for the permit, applicants must be third country nationals (non-EU, non-EEA, and non-Swiss nationals) and must demonstrate that they belong to any one of the following 3 categories:
Therefore: Only for non-EU citizens! A candidate is required to earn at least €42,000 annually to qualify. The permit is initially valid for one year and is subject to renewal by Residency Malta provided the applicant continues to satisfy the criteria. Visa and permit acquisition standards apply, including evidence of eligibility. Applications for a residence permit must be done in person at Identity Malta. Nomad Residence Permit applicants need a current passport, valid health insurance, and proof of accommodation together with a police conduct certificate. Digital nomads may be eligible for a lower income tax rate of 10% on approved work revenue and receive relief from double taxation. Nonetheless, employees of an overseas company servicing its subsidiary in Malta are ineligible for this permit.
Our service includes consultation, document compilation, form filling, and contacting authorities on behalf of the employer and/or the employee.
Several applications have been declined because of errors, ranging from trivial to significant, in the completion of the forms or because of incomplete documentation. Consequently, applicants often end up in a cycle of revisiting the office to rectify the application and gather the required papers. At DWP Dr. Werner Partners, our commitment is to compile all necessary documentation upfront and confirm that our team meticulously evaluates your application prior to submission to the authority, ensuring it is legally valid and accepted.
The Applicant may add family members to their application, such as their spouse, their minor children and/or those of their spouse, unmarried adult children who rely on the applicant or adult children with a medical condition or disability.
However, if a minor child does not fall under the sole custody of the applicant and both parents aren’t included in the application, prior permission from Residency Malta is required as these cases are reviewed individually.
Unfortunately, this cannot be done. However, dependents can be included during the renewal process of the applicant. The only exception to this policy is in the case of newborns.
Digital nomads in Malta enjoy a mix of a favourable business environment, great infrastructure, and a leisurely vibe, creating an unparalleled experience. This has made Malta popular among EU-based digital nomads for a while now, fostering an active community. The island also features nomad groups, co-working and co-living spaces that facilitate frequent networking events.
One of the advantages of being a digital nomad in Malta is the excellent internet connectivity that the island offers. Malta has a nationwide 5G network that ensures fast and reliable mobile data. Moreover, there are over four hundred public Wi-Fi hotspots that are free to use in various locations, such as parks, squares, and bus stops. Malta also boasts the highest fibre broadband penetration in the EU, with speeds up to 2000 Mbps available in most areas. Furthermore, many cafes, restaurants, bars, and hotels provide free Wi-Fi access to their patrons. This means that digital nomads can work online from any place they like without worrying about internet issues.
Holders of the Nomad Residence Permit and their dependents are not permitted to work or engage in business with Maltese-based employers or companies. If a third-country national wishes to provide services in Malta, they must give up their Nomad permit and apply for an employment or self-employment residence permit instead. Residency Malta may revoke the Nomad Permit if they find out a holder is participating in such activities.
Tax issues may emerge according to foreign and Maltese laws.
