Living and working in Malta – What to expect

Malta is becoming more and more popular with entrepreneurs and workers alike. The attractive tax refund entices many companies to move their business to the Mediterranean island, and the companies in return attract many skilled workers from all over the world.

The demand for qualified personnel has been rising in recent years, and Malta has become a popular destination to spend the summer. Many workers are here for the hot summer season, which means that more jobs become available during the winter months. Someone who thinks about spending a longer period of time here has an even better chance of making a career.

The Malta iGaming industry offers plenty of opportunities, especially for bilingual or trilingual people, or people skilled in IT, marketing or design. Starting salaries are usually also well above the national average for incomes, which is currently around €15.000. The salary depends, of course, on the position and level of responsibility.

However, with regards to the actual cost of living in Malta, and the reasonably low income tax laws, it is possible to make a very decent living here, and to enjoy life to the max. The income tax rate is tiered, and depending on the amount, it is 15%, 25% or 35%. Overall, tax deductions seem similar to countries like the United Kingdom, but they are significantly less than in Germany. The other deduction of the salary is the National Insurance, which is 10% of the gross income, but capped at around €135 per month.

I cannot tell you whether living in Malta would be something for you or not, it solely depends on the person. You can have the party buzz of Paceville, or the tranquillity of the western part of the island. There is a lot of live music in the summer, and even more parties, bars and clubs. But if you are not into that, you can enjoy the stunning nature and waters, or the culture in theatres or museums. It is definitely an island worth looking at.
