Malta International Airport – Setting standards for other Mediterranean countries

It is no secret anymore that Malta’s economy is doing very well in comparison with other countries in the EU. The secret to the success of the island is partly due to foreign owned companies that move their operating business to Malta. But it is not everything to just provide tax benefits for those companies, there are also other factors contributing to the popularity of the island.

If you are a businessman, you may have to travel frequently between Malta and other countries in the world. A well-organised airport providing good connections to other countries will greatly affect your own efficiency. For example, daily flights to all major European cities might give you an advantage over a country that does not offer frequent connections. If you have to go to London for example, you will probably have an advantage if there are many flights going at different times of the day, rather than one flight a day, or every other day.

Malta’s International Airport has become a benchmark for other Mediterranean islands. There are currently 31 airlines operating 86 different routes. The award winning airport just broke their own record with the busiest month ever in August. But what makes the airport so successful? The great results are mainly due to continuous efforts to improve services and routes. The aim is to provide all year round regular connections. These are achieved with incentive programs for the winter months that can give up to 60% rebate on passenger service charges. Overall, the airport charges are being kept as low as possible, and they have not increased since 2006. In the winter season, the airport also offers free landings to scheduled carriers.

Another aspect that the MIA is currently working on is to improve the services for travellers. If you have ever been to the Malta International Airport, you will find that the airport is small and very efficiently structured. It is very quick to drop your bag (if you have one), go through security and to find your gate. It is not unusual to be at your gate within 15-20 min after arriving at the airport. All this makes Malta even more attractive for entrepreneurs that have to travel a lot within Europe, and from my own experience I can confirm that travelling from and to Malta has always been a pleasant experience.
