A new drama series from Sky1 is currently being shot in Malta. Apocalypse Slough is an end-of-days drama telling the stories of events and people after a comet has hit earth. The show is expected to be aired later this year.
The show features Hollywood star Rob Lowe, who is currently on filming location in Malta. His role is that of a catholic priest. Other actors include Jenna Fisher, who previously starred in The Office, Megan Mullaly, Pauline Quirke and Mathew Baynton.
Malta has become a popular filming location, and parts of the new 10-part series are being shot on the Mediterranean island. Other filming locations for the TV show will be in the UK and South Africa.
In recent years, more production studios have chosen Malta and its sister island Gozo and the filming location. For example parts of the first season of Game of Thrones, the Hollywood movie By the Sea with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Troy and Gladiator all used shooting locations around Malta and Gozo. The movie industry has become an important part of Malta’s economy.
The government offers interesting incentives for production companies if they choose Malta is a filming location. It is possible to get a refund of the VAT, a cash rebate relating to the expenses of filming and other financial incentives. When filming is carried out, a production company is usually created, and then it is also possible to apply for a refund of the corporation tax is certain criteria are met.
