The Notte Bianca is an annual cultural event. Every year it is held in the streets of Valletta, and it celebrates culture and art all night long. This year it is held on Saturday, October 4. It has become Valletta’s largest cultural event. The museums are going to open their doors all night long, and many are going to host theatre and dance performances, as well as visual art exhibitions. In this night the streets of Valletta will become an open-air concert venue with a lot of live music offering contemporary, classical and pop music.
The event is organised by the Arts Council Malta and supported by the Ministry for Justice, Culture and the Local Government. Over the course of the event, every area of Valletta will be involved, starting at the city gate, and ending at Fort St. Elmo.
The first Notte Bianca was held in Valletta in 2006. It was so successful that it was repeated again the next year, and all the following years since.
The complete set of events is outlined on the website for the Notte Bianca. However, some notable events are the Bellophone, which is a project in which the people can play the bells of two churches simultaneously. This is achieved through a playing board with buttons which is wirelessly connected to the bells in the churches. The event is held on the Independence Square. An interesting art installation is the Amaze(2) which is a massive cube installation on the Pjazza St. George. Inside the cube is a maze that is portraying various scientific elements. It will take the visitors through different interactive scientific exhibits.
Apart from plenty of art and music events, visitors can also enjoy The Palace State Rooms, The Palace Armoury, The National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Archaeology and many other places of interest. If you have time on the 4th of October, you should definitely visit Valletta at night and enjoy the spectacular Notte Bianca.
