Online gaming revenue on the rise – €30 billion expected in 2015

People have always liked to gamble. Guessing the right numbers in the weekly lotto, getting a bingo or betting on your favourite horse, gambling has and very likely always will be a popular pastime. Of course, who wouldn’t want to win a huge jackpot or even a smaller amount of money? The prospect of winning a larger sum in combination with the thrill and excitement of the game is what drives people to continue playing.

The range of games is very broad: casino games, sports betting, bingo, horse racing, dice games, lotto, etc. For many years people have been gambling in betting shops, bingo halls or slot machine halls. In the last 10 years online casinos have become more and more popular, and revenues are continually rising. Annual revenues are expected to reach €30 billion in 2015. The reason for the trend is because playing online is more convenient, and payouts are often more generous, as the operators save money with the cost of operation.

There are different gaming jurisdictions that regulate online gambling and issue licences. Gibraltar and Malta are the most popular jurisdictions in Europe, mainly because the taxation is considerably low, and the regulatory authorities have a good reputation with regards to player protection.

The Lotteries and Gaming Authority in Malta provides licences for online casinos and sports betting operators. There are already over 300 operators licensed, and the number is growing. What makes the Maltese remote Gaming licence so popular is that Malta imposes relatively low taxes on gaming revenues, and that the licence offers great player protection. The office of Dr Werner & Partner acts as a consultant for gaming operators who wish to move their business to Malta. We assist with the necessary paperwork and ensure that the application process is completed as fast as possible.
