In today’s post I would like to talk a little bit about the capital of Malta. Maybe you did not know it yet, but Valletta is the smallest capital in Europe. It is safe to say that this tiny city is a living monument of architecture. And this is the reason why Valletta was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980.
The capital is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Malta. You can find beautiful cafes and wine bars that are surrounded by baroque architecture. You can admire one of the most beautiful interior designs of churches in the St. Paul’s Co Cathedral in the heart of the city.
What is there to do in Valletta?
The capital of Malta is very much alive and one of the centres of tourism. Especially when doing a day trip you can see a lot of this beautiful city. Valletta is also perfect for history fans. The city is surrounded by various forts and fortifications. Since Valletta is not very large you can easily reach everything on foot.
You will not have to be afraid to get stranded in Valletta. The buses can take you quickly to any other part of the island. Since many of the towns are right next to each other you will also not feel like you are in small town.
There are a few things that you should do if you are ever in Valletta:
– Have a coffee in the great Café Cordina and enjoy the great atmosphere
– If you would like to experience the wonderful sunrise with views over the harbour, you should go to the bastion of St. Barbara
– Visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens at noon to see the cannon being fired, or in the late afternoon to watch cruise ships leave the harbour
– Take the ferry over to Sliema and do a harbour cruise – don’t forget your camera for the best views of Valletta
– Watch one of the shows in Manoel Theatre
– Visit the Casa Rocca Piccola to learn about the history of Malta, and see how the Grand Master used to live
There is so much to see in Valetta, and even though the city is so very small, it is definitely worth a visit.
