Yacht registration in Malta – Popular mooring locations

Malta has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in recent years. The warm Mediterranean climate, cultural heritage and the cleanest waters in Europe greatly contributed to this fact. When you are visiting Malta, and you take a stroll along the beach, it is not easy to miss all the sailing boats and yachts passing you along the coast. You can see most of the beautiful sailing boats on the weekends, when people take their deserved break and enjoy the beautiful weather on the sea.

There are many locations all across Malta where you can moor your yacht. The prices vary depending on the location of the marina, a more central marina is generally more expensive than one that is located in the north or the south of the country. One of the biggest yacht marinas is the Msida and Ta’Xbiex marina. It is centrally located and sheltered from rough winds. The marina can handle pleasure yachts of up to 22 m in length, and it is currently the most popular marina in Malta.

If you have a much larger yacht your you might want to consider mooring it in the Grand Harbour of Valletta, or the Three Cities. When visiting Valletta or the Three cities you can often see some of the largest super yachts in the world. It is a very popular location with Arab Sheiks and sometimes you can even see some of the world’s most famous yachts, such as the one from Steven Spielberg.

Some of the advantages to register your pleasure yacht in Malta are the much lower tax for registering your vessel, especially with regards to the VAT, as it does not depend on the price of the vessel, but the ship registration type and size. In recent years Malta has become more and more popular with foreign individuals to register their pleasure yacht on the Mediterranean island. Having your vessel registered here also does not mean that you will have to keep it here the whole year, you can take it anywhere you want.

When registering a yacht in Malta it is possible to do this on your own, however it is recommended to have someone local to assist you with the Maltese bureaucracy. The office of Dr. Werner & Partner is specialised in yacht registrations in Malta, and we would be happy to assist you in this matter.
